Celltrion’s Remsima SC is solidifying its position as a leading autoimmune disease treatment in Europe.
On May 28, Celltrion announced that its subcutaneous (SC) formulation of infliximab, “Remsima SC,” had captured a 22% share of the overall European infliximab market as of the end of last year, according to data from pharmaceutical market research firm IQVIA. Since its European launch in 2020, the product has expanded its market share more than fivefold from just 4% in 2021.
Including the intravenous (IV) formulation “Remsima,” the entire Remsima product line recorded a 71% market share in Europe at the end of 2023. This means that 7 out of 10 autoimmune patients prescribed infliximab in Europe are being treated with Celltrion’s Remsima products.
Given its success in Europe—driven by administration convenience and high preference among physicians and patients—Celltrion expects strong sales growth for Zymfentra, the U.S. brand of Remsima SC. The company believes that, since Remsima SC has already established prescribing stability in Europe, prescription volumes for Zymfentra will increase sharply once it is fully listed in formularies of major U.S. insurance providers.
Celltrion’s other autoimmune treatments are also gaining traction in Europe. The adalimumab biosimilar “Yuflyma” recorded a 21% market share at the end of 2023. Despite entering the European market as a latecomer in 2021 and holding only 1% market share in 2022, it grew rapidly over two years to become a front-runner in prescriptions.
The ustekinumab biosimilar “Steqima,” launched in Europe last October, also made early gains—securing over 2 percentage points of market share within just two months. This success is attributed to tailored sales strategies executed by local subsidiaries in major European countries, aligned with each country’s pharmaceutical market characteristics.
Beyond autoimmune diseases, Celltrion is also seeing strong performance in oncology. “Begzelma” achieved a 28% market share by the end of last year, despite launching 2–3 years later than competing products. “Truxima” (rituximab) and “Herzuma” (trastuzumab) are also maintaining stable prescription levels with market shares close to 30% in Europe.
A Celltrion official stated, “Remsima SC’s influence is growing rapidly, and we expect this momentum to carry over into the U.S., the world’s largest pharmaceutical market. With our existing products already leading in prescriptions in Europe, we plan to drive further performance growth in the second half of this year through the launch of new biosimilar products.”
