Singer Jeon Somi recently revealed that she suffered severe hair damage due to the side effects of frequent dyeing. During an appearance on Hyeri’s YouTube channel, Hyeri asked her, "How do you take care of your scalp? Do you keep bleaching your hair?“

Jeon Somi said, "I've been bleaching my hair for three years now, and I do all my care routines at home. I don't go to dermatologists or salons because I prefer handling everything myself. I hadn’t even paid much attention to my scalp, but with all the recent dyeing and styling for my activities, my hair ended up breaking off due to a dyeing mistake. At one point, I even had a bald spot at the back of my head. It was so shocking—it was the most depressing period of my life.”

She continued, "When I saw other idols with short hair, I used to think, 'Well, that’s just how it is, right?' But after it happened to me, I realized how terrible it actually feels. Even when I ran, my hair wouldn’t move because it was so short and flat—it was awful.”

Jeon Somi also mentioned that she had to undergo a hair growth procedure because of the severe damage. "It felt like what people with hair loss go through to add hair. I found a place and started getting the treatment. I also became much more diligent about scalp care. Normally, I’m not someone who takes supplements regularly, but after what happened, I knew I had to. My hair has somewhat recovered now, but the bald spot was way worse than you could imagine," she explained.

Hair and Scalp Damage Easily Caused by Harsh Bleaching Agents

Many celebrities, including Jeon Somi, frequently bleach their hair to change their image. Bleaching involves removing the natural pigment from hair using harsh chemicals. If done without considering the condition of the hair and scalp, it can easily lead to side effects.

To remove the natural pigment of hair, a solution diluted with strong acids and hydrogen peroxide is used. These harsh bleaching agents disrupt the moisture balance of the hair and corrode and oxidize keratin, melanin, and moisture, leading to damaged hair texture.

Achieving bright blonde hair like Jeon Somi's may require multiple bleaching sessions. If the hair is already damaged from previous bleaching, it may not withstand the process and could melt or break off. Bleach coming into contact with the scalp can also cause itching and oozing.

Hair Growth Treatment for Natural Feel and Flexible Styling

If hair has broken off severely, as in Jeon Somi's case, hair augmentation can be considered. Hair augmentation is a method where artificial hair is attached to natural hair with tiny knots, similar to eyelash extensions, creating a fuller, natural look.

Compared to wigs or hair extensions, hair augmentation has less discomfort and fewer concerns about secondary hair loss. It also allows for more freedom in styling, including dyeing, perming, and using heat tools, making it an advantageous option for celebrities who frequently change their hairstyles. The effects typically last around three months, depending on the individual.

Helpful To Consume Hair-Healthy Foods and Supplements

After bleaching, it's important to nourish damaged hair by applying treatments or hair masks at least every 2-3 days. Using conditioner to prevent tangling is also essential, as tangled hair can worsen damage.

Since UV rays are a major cause of hair damage, they should be avoided as much as possible. Before going out, it’s advisable to use hair spray with UV protection or wear hats or carry parasols to shield hair from the sun.Taking supplements, as Jeon Somi does, can also be helpful. Nutrients beneficial for dry and easily shedding hair include biotin, vitamin E, and omega-3. Consuming protein-rich foods such as eggs, chicken breast, milk, tofu, almonds, and beans regularly can also contribute to healthier hair.
