Actress Goo HyeSun(40) shared a story about being approached by a university student. Recently, she appeared on MBC’s ‘Radio Star’ and talked about her life after graduating from university. Goo HyeSun revealed that she graduated with a degree in Film Studies from Sungkyunkwan University, where she was the top student after 13 years. Cutting Out Alcohol Can Be Effective for Weight Loss

What is the secret behind her being approached by a university student, even in her 40s? Previously, Goo HyeSun gained attention for successfully losing 14kg. She shared her approach, saying, "I stopped drinking alcohol and reduced my food intake." She also mentioned that she made an effort to sleep well.

Goo HyeSun highlighted that cutting down on alcohol and controlling food portions are effective ways to manage weight. Alcohol is high in calories but low in nutritional value, so drinking frequently can lead to weight gain. According to the Korean Nutrition Society, one shot of soju (50ml) contains 71 calories, a glass of draft beer (475ml) has 176 calories, a shot of vodka (50ml) has 120 calories, and one glass of makgeolli (200ml) has 92 calories. Among these, soju has the lowest calorie count, but a typical bottle of soju (360ml) contains over 500 calories.

Alcohol is used by the body before other energy sources like carbohydrates or proteins. This means that no matter how much alcohol you drink, it doesn’t keep you feeling full for long. This is why people often crave snacks when drinking alcohol. Most alcohol snacks are greasy and spicy, which leads to consuming even more calories than usual.

Excess calories are stored as fat, causing weight gain. Therefore, by cutting out alcohol, like Goo HyeSun did, you naturally reduce your intake of high-calorie foods like alcohol and snacks, which is beneficial for weight loss. However, some might think that drinking alcohol without snacks leads to less weight gain, but although fewer calories are consumed, this can harm the stomach, so it is important to have light snacks like cheese, tofu, fish, or vegetables. These protein-rich, low-calorie foods help detoxify alcohol and reduce alcohol absorption in the body.

Eating about 500 fewer calories a day can help with weight loss

The method of reducing food intake is already well-known as an effective way to lose weight. The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity recommends eating about 500 fewer calories than the body needs each day to lose about 0.5kg of body weight per week. Eating fiber-rich foods like vegetables and fruits first fills the stomach, which leads to eating less rice and side dishes and prevents overeating. In fact, a study by Cornell University found that people who ate fruits first consumed fewer calories than those who ate eggs and bacon first.

Good sleep also impacts dieting and aging. If you don’t get enough sleep, the hormone ghrelin, which triggers hunger, increases, leading to overeating. Lack of sleep also reduces the secretion of growth hormones, which play a crucial role in fat burning and muscle recovery. As a result, fat-burning efficiency decreases even during a diet. Furthermore, poor sleep can lead to an overproduction of cortisol, the stress hormone, which weakens the immune system, increases inflammation in the body, and negatively affects the skin. Collagen breakdown, which is responsible for skin elasticity, is accelerated, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin.
