Actress Seol Inah recently experienced sudden side pain while running. On a recent broadcast, she showcased her training for a 10km marathon in Jeju Island. Previously, she had mentioned that she "hates running," and during her training, she appeared to struggle, expressing her concerns by saying, "I will definitely come in last." As she began her practice, she fell behind and found it difficult to cope with the strong headwind.

While attempting to complete her distance, Seol Inah faced symptoms like nausea and chest tightness, and eventually, she felt pain in her side and her heart rate increased significantly, prompting her to stop running and switch to walking. After that, her heart rate began to drop, and she successfully completed a 5km run.

The Pain in the Side While Running

Many people, like Seol In-a, have experienced pain in their sides while running, commonly known as "side stitch." The term "side stitch" refers to a sharp pain felt in the side area, and while the exact cause is not definitively understood, several theories exist.

The first theory suggests that the pain is caused by irritation of the peritoneum, a thin membrane that surrounds various organs in the abdomen, such as the stomach and intestines. When running, the body shakes, causing friction between the organs and the peritoneum, leading to pain.

Another theory posits that the increase in breathing rate during exercise may stimulate the diaphragm, resulting in discomfort. This theory suggests that rapid breathing can cause spasms in the diaphragm, leading to pain in the side. Additionally, if one eats before running, the distended stomach may further aggravate the pain due to increased pressure.

Despite the fear of side stitch, running offers numerous health benefits. Regular running strengthens the heart, boosts immunity, and increases energy levels. The calorie expenditure can be significant, with around 700 kcal burned (for an average 70kg adult), making it beneficial for weight management. It also helps develop lower body muscles, including the glutes, thighs, and calves.

Running is also advantageous for mental health. Research shows that runners have stronger connections between brain areas responsible for working memory and self-control compared to non-runners. The cognitive demands of running, such as being aware of one’s surroundings, enhance focus and judgment.

Tips for Preventing and Managing Side Pain

If side pain is frequent, it’s advisable to wait 2-3 hours after eating before exercising. Incorporating 10 minutes of stretching to relax the muscles in the side area before running can also be beneficial. However, if pain occurs during exercise, it’s wise to stop and rest instead of pushing through the discomfort. Sitting comfortably and taking deep breaths or gently massaging the painful area can help alleviate the pain. A study of 600 adults in Australia found that about 40% experienced relief from side stitch pain through deep breathing exercises.
