K-pop group ITZY recently shared their health management routines, particularly regarding the use of supplements, during an appearance on MBC FM4U's ‘I'm Kim ShinYoung, the song of hope at noon’.

Recently, DJ Kim ShinYoung asked the members about their health, particularly with the recent return of member Lia, who had been on a break for health reasons for about a year. Lia confirmed, “I’ve been taking my supplements regularly.”

When asked which member is the most health-conscious, Chaeryeong responded, “It used to be me. I make sure to take vitamins and probiotics.” Yuna then chimed in, saying, “Recently, Chaeryeong recommended magnesium to me,” to which Chaeryeong explained, “Yuna has been experiencing eye twitching.”

Yuna commented, “My eyes twitch when I’m tired.” Kim Shin-young expressed concern, saying, “Aren’t you born in ’03? Your eyes are twitching already?” Yuna responded, “Being born in ’03 isn’t that young anymore. These days, when I go to music shows, I see kids born in ’07 and ’08. It’s no joke.”

Causes of Eye Twitching in Young People

Experiencing eye twitching at a young age, like Yuna, can occur due to several factors such as overwork, stress, and nutrient imbalances. Generally, getting enough rest, reducing caffeine intake, and ensuring adequate sleep can help alleviate the symptoms.

Magnesium deficiency is known to be a potential cause of eye twitching, leading Yuna and others to take supplements. For normal nerve function, minerals such as magnesium and calcium are essential, and a deficiency can result in twitching.

However, due to the typical Korean diet, which includes grains, nuts, and spinach, many people can get sufficient magnesium from their meals alone. Still, if one has a habit of skipping meals, picky eating, or often relies on fast food, a nutrient imbalance may lead to symptoms like eye twitching.

Persistent Eye Twitching: A Potential Indicator of Neurological Disorders

If magnesium supplementation and proper sleep do not alleviate eye twitching and the symptoms persist for an extended period, it may be necessary to consider neurological disorders. One notable condition associated with eye twitching is blepharospasm, which involves abnormal muscle contractions around the eyes due to nerve issues.

Another similar condition is hemifacial spasm, which occurs when the facial nerve is compressed by blood vessels, leading to involuntary twitching on one side of the face. This can escalate to facial spasms in severe cases.

Facial twitching may indicate more serious conditions, such as stroke or brain tumors, with a 10% chance of being a signal of a neurological issue. Therefore, if symptoms last more than a month or worsen, seeking medical evaluation is recommended.

To manage eye twitching effectively, it's crucial to avoid overexertion, sleep deprivation, stress, and excessive caffeine. Maintaining a proper diet to ensure adequate nutrient intake is also essential. Additionally, wearing sunglasses outdoors can help reduce eye strain, and using artificial tears may relieve fatigue.
