SHINee's Taemin “I might have ADHD”...What are the key signs of it?
[Celeb Health] SHINee's Taemin Suspects Adult ADHD
K-pop boy group Taemin recently shared that he suspects he might have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
a video titled "Welcoming the Fairy Tale Taemin" was posted on Hyeri's YouTube channel. In the video, Hyeri asked, "I've heard you often lose things, earning you the nickname 'Magic Hands.' What’s the story behind that?"
Taemin responded, "I've actually wondered if I might have ADHD because of it." He continued, "I learned through YouTube algorithms that one of the characteristics of ADHD is severe forgetfulness and frequently losing things. That made me think, ‘This could be me.’ There was a time I lost my earphones twice in one day. I bought a new pair, and then lost those as well. Whenever I go out for a gathering, I always end up losing my phone. When I get home, I realize I have nothing with me.“
Frequent Loss of Items Can Be a Symptom of ADHD
Although it's uncertain whether Taemin actually has ADHD without a proper diagnosis, his concerns are valid. ADHD can affect adults as well as children. Unlike childhood ADHD, which often involves hyperactivity, adult ADHD is more characterized by a lack of focus.
Adults with ADHD may frequently engage in careless behaviors, such as tripping or injuring themselves, failing to plan ahead, or being unable to complete tasks within a set timeframe. Like Taemin, frequently losing personal items is another common symptom of adult ADHD. In addition to misplacing objects, they may forget important tasks and struggle with emotional regulation, leading to frequent conflicts with others.
If these symptoms of ADHD are left untreated, they can lead to difficulties in academic performance, work, and relationships, as well as a range of mental health issues. Studies show that over 70% of adults with ADHD also suffer from coexisting conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol use disorder, or impulse control disorder.
How to Manage ADHD Symptoms?
Treatment for adult ADHD typically involves both medication and non-medication approaches. Medications that target dopamine receptors can be effective, as ADHD is linked to dopamine deficiency. Non-medication treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal skills training, and social skills training.
To manage adult ADHD symptoms, it's beneficial to practice organizing daily tasks. Planning ahead and anticipating potential difficulties are also important strategies. Additionally, focusing on what others are saying and mentally summarizing the information can improve interpersonal relationships. Keeping regular notes and reminders is another helpful habit.
