Comedian Shin Bong-sun has confessed to suffering from hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).

In a recent appearance on MBC “Radio Star,” the comedian explained why she took on a musical about menopausal women and said, “I was sad because my female hormone levels were low.”

“Actually, I’ve been suffering from hypothyroidism for a few years now,” she said, “and when I took a test, my thyroid level was excellent, but I was sad that my female hormone level had dropped.”

Thyroid Hormone Deficiency: Metabolic Disorder Leading to Chronic Fatigue, Loss of Appetite, Constipation, and More

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland located in the neck does not produce enough thyroid hormone. In short, it results in low or deficient thyroid hormone levels. This condition commonly occurs after thyroid surgery or radioisotope treatment.

Role of Thyroid Hormones: Thyroid hormones are essential for regulating the body’s metabolism, maintaining body temperature through energy metabolism, and supporting brain and nervous system development. A deficiency in these hormones leads to a metabolic disorder, causing a decline in metabolic functions throughout the body.

The symptoms of low metabolic function vary widely, but in adults, common symptoms include chronic fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight gain. The mitochondria, which are the energy-producing cells in the body, become less efficient, leading to increased fatigue.

Other common symptoms include constipation and sensitivity to cold. Additional symptoms may include dry skin, muscle pain, and memory loss. As Shin mentioned, thyroid abnormalities can also affect female hormone levels. Hypothyroidism impacts both male and female sex hormones, increasing the risk of infertility. In women, it can cause ovulation disorders, while in men, it can decrease sperm count and semen quality.

Treatment involves supplementing the deficient thyroid hormones. Once hypothyroidism occurs, it tends to be a permanent condition, requiring lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Although the prospect of long-term medication can be daunting, these supplements generally do not cause side effects even with prolonged use.

Lifestyle modifications are also essential. Maintaining an appropriate caloric intake to manage weight and ensuring adequate hydration are crucial. A diet rich in fiber from fruits and vegetables is important. Additionally, including iodine-containing foods like rye bread, fish, seaweed, and eggs can support thyroid function. Regular moderate exercise can also help boost metabolic function.

Shin Bong-sun’s revelation sheds light on the struggles many face with hypothyroidism. Proper medical treatment and lifestyle adjustments can help individuals manage this chronic condition and maintain their health and well-being.
