Actress Moon Geunyoung (37) Reassures Fans After Recovery from Acute Compartment Syndrome.

Actress Moon Geunyoung has reassured her fans not to worry, revealing that she has fully recovered from acute compartment syndrome. On the morning of the 21st, she attended the press conference for Netflix's series "Hellbound 2" held at JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul, where she spoke about her health after the event.

On her Instagram, Moon stated, “Many people have been concerned about my health. I am completely healed now and in a very healthy state. Although I have gained a little weight, I am currently on a diet and watching my progress. I hope you will support my diet success instead of worrying about my health.”

Moon Geunyoung was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome in February 2017 after experiencing sudden pain in her right arm, which led to four surgeries. In 2019, she announced at a press conference that she had fully recovered, and in 2022, she shared photos showing her surgical scars on Instagram.

What is Acute Compartment Syndrome?

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is an emergency condition where pressure within a muscle compartment increases, leading to reduced blood flow and potential tissue damage. This condition usually occurs in the limbs (arms and legs) and can result from severe trauma, fractures, or complications after surgery.

The main cause is increased pressure within the compartment due to bleeding or swelling from trauma or fractures. If the pressure rises above a certain level, blood flow to muscles and nerves can be obstructed, causing a lack of oxygen and nutrients, which can lead to tissue necrosis. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, sensory deficits, and muscle weakness. Prolonged lack of blood supply can damage tissues or lead to permanent loss of function, making prompt diagnosis and treatment essential to avoid serious complications.

Treatment for acute compartment syndrome typically involves a surgical procedure called fasciotomy, which relieves pressure in the affected compartment and allows blood to flow back to the damaged tissues. Given that Moon underwent several surgeries on her right arm, it is presumed she received such decompression surgery.

Moon Geunyoung's weight gain is not directly attributed to the acute compartment syndrome itself. After the surgery, her activity levels would have decreased, especially considering the need for a long recovery period following multiple surgeries, which can lead to increased weight. Additionally, medications used for pain management or to reduce inflammation, such as steroids, can lead to fluid retention and increased appetite, potentially resulting in weight gain over time.
